WAREHOUSE CONTROL & PERFORMANCE
Wave Picking
Wave picking organizes the release of selected orders or order lines into planned groups using criteria such as service, cutoff or operating capacity. The physical picking method used within a wave can vary.
WAVE PICKING IN PRACTICE
- Select the workApply the wave criteria.
- Release feasible tasksCoordinate capacity and dependencies.
- Review completionTrack shortages and unfinished work.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
One wave. Different pick tasks.
A facility releases orders for a 16:00 carrier collection in one planned wave. Some orders use discrete picking and others are batched under the operating design. Sharing a release group does not mean every item is picked simultaneously.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Wave Picking
Is wave picking identical to batch picking?
No. Waves organize release; batching organizes how multiple orders are picked together.
Must every task start at the same moment?
No. Sequencing depends on the operating design.
Does releasing a wave prove it can finish on time?
No. Check stock, capacity and remaining work.
