Why Brands Choose an East Coast Fulfillment Center

The East Coast holds the largest concentration of U.S. consumers, from Boston through New York, Philadelphia, Washington and down to Atlanta and Miami. A single well-placed East Coast fulfillment center puts a brand within two-day ground transit of roughly half the country's households, which means cheaper postage (lower carrier zones) and faster delivery without paying for air.

Three corridors do most of the work. Northern and central New Jersey (Exit 8A, the Meadowlands, Edison and Cranbury) sit next to the Port of New York and New Jersey and the New York metro, the single largest consumer market in the U.S. Eastern Pennsylvania (the Lehigh Valley around Allentown and Easton, plus Lancaster, Harrisburg and the I-81 corridor) offers lower rents than New Jersey with almost identical reach. Atlanta and Central Florida serve the Southeast and connect to the Port of Savannah, now a leading import gateway for Asian-origin freight.

The trade-off is cost. Warehouse rents in New Jersey are among the highest in the country and labor is tight. Many brands get the same delivery outcome from Pennsylvania, Maryland or Virginia at a lower storage rate. If most of your customers are in the Southeast, Georgia or the Carolinas can beat the Northeast on both cost and transit time.

How to pick an East Coast corridor

  • Map your orders first. Pull 12 months of ship-to zip codes. If 35%+ of volume is in the Northeast, start in NJ or PA
  • Northern NJ: fastest to NYC and New England, highest rent, closest to the port for import-heavy brands
  • Lehigh Valley and Central PA: same two-day reach as NJ at lower cost, strong labor pool, dense carrier network
  • Atlanta: the Southeast hub, one-day ground to most of GA, TN, AL, SC and NC, two-day to Florida and Texas
  • Central Florida: only worth it if Florida is a top-three state for you; it is a peninsula and adds zones to everything else

What to Check Before Choosing an East Coast 3PL

Location is only the first filter. These are the operational questions that decide whether the node performs.

Run the zone analysis

Ask the provider to run your last 12 months of ship-to zip codes against their East Coast facility and show the zone distribution and average transit days. A good 3PL does this before quoting. If they cannot, model it yourself with the USPS zone chart and compare candidate cities.

Carrier mix and pickup schedule

Northeast facilities usually have daily UPS, FedEx and USPS pickups plus regional carriers such as LaserShip/OnTrac and UDS. Regional carriers can be 15 to 30% cheaper on short-zone parcels. Ask which carriers pick up daily and what the last pickup time is.

Rent and storage rates

New Jersey storage is often 30 to 60% higher per pallet than Pennsylvania or Maryland for the same reach. If your product is bulky or slow-turning, that gap matters more than an extra half day of transit to Boston.

Import gateway

Brands importing from Asia via the Suez or East Coast all-water services land at NY/NJ, Savannah or Norfolk. A 3PL near your port of entry saves drayage and speeds receiving. Brands importing via Los Angeles may be better served with a West Coast node first.

Weather and peak resilience

Northeast winters close roads and delay pickups. Ask what happened to ship times in the last two January storms and how the facility staffs for a Q4 that starts earlier every year.

Second node planning

Most brands add a West Coast node between 1,500 and 5,000 orders a month. Ask whether the 3PL has a western facility so a second node does not mean a second WMS, second integration and second contract.

Onboarding or setup (one time) $0 to $2,500

All figures in USD. Ranges reflect typical U.S. 3PL rates quoted to eCommerce and B2B brands in 2025 to 2026, drawn from RFPs run through 3PL Hub and published provider rate cards. Shipping depends on negotiated carrier contracts, zone mix and package weight. Volume discounts and contract terms apply. Request quotes directly from providers for exact pricing.

East Coast Fulfillment: Common Questions

What brands ask when choosing between East Coast fulfillment locations.

Where is the best place for an East Coast fulfillment center?
For most national DTC brands, eastern Pennsylvania or central New Jersey. Both reach roughly half of U.S. households by ground in two days, sit next to the largest consumer market in the country and have dense carrier networks. Pennsylvania is usually cheaper; New Jersey is closer to the port and to New York City. If the Southeast is your largest region, Atlanta is the better choice.
How much of the U.S. can I reach in two days from New Jersey or Pennsylvania?
About half of U.S. households by ground, covering the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley and much of the Southeast. Adding a second node in California or Nevada extends two-day ground coverage to roughly 90% of households.
Is New Jersey or Pennsylvania cheaper for fulfillment?
Pennsylvania, in most cases. Storage in the Lehigh Valley, Lancaster or Harrisburg is often 30 to 60% lower per pallet than northern New Jersey, and pick and pack labor rates are lower. Transit times to New York, Boston and Washington are typically one day from either state.
Do I need both an East Coast and a West Coast fulfillment center?
Not at first. Most brands start with one node placed nearest their largest customer cluster and add a second between 1,500 and 5,000 orders a month, when the postage savings from shorter zones outweigh the cost of splitting inventory. See our West Coast fulfillment center guide for the western half of that decision.
Which East Coast ports matter for importing inventory?
The Port of New York and New Jersey is the largest on the East Coast and serves the Northeast corridor. Savannah, Georgia, is a major gateway for the Southeast and now handles significant Asian-origin volume via the Suez and Panama routes. Norfolk, Charleston and Baltimore also serve regional distribution. A 3PL near your port of entry reduces drayage cost and receiving time.
Can an East Coast 3PL also handle retail and wholesale orders?
Many can, and the Northeast is home to a large share of U.S. retail distribution centers, which makes East Coast 3PLs a natural fit for brands selling into Target, Walmart, Sephora or department stores. Confirm EDI capability, routing guide experience and chargeback history. See our retail EDI 3PL guide.
