INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
Batch Picking
Batch picking combines pick demand from multiple orders into a shared picking trip or work assignment.
BATCH PICKING IN PRACTICE
- Group suitable orders
- Pick combined quantities
- Sort & verify orders
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Ten orders. One location visit.
Ten orders each require two units of the same SKU. A batch task can collect 20 units from its location, followed by allocation of two units to each order. This may reduce repeated travel, but the operation still has ten customer orders to verify, pack and dispatch. Count sorting work when comparing productivity.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Batch Picking
Is batch picking always faster?
No. Savings in travel must outweigh grouping, sorting and exception-handling work.
Is batch picking the same as wave picking?
No. A wave organizes release of work; a batch combines picks across orders. They can be used together.
