Quick Facts

  • Kitting combines individual SKUs into a new sellable unit (a kit) before or at the moment of order
  • Pre-kitting builds inventory of finished kits in advance; kit-to-order assembles at pick time. The right choice depends on demand predictability
  • Typical cost is $0.75 to $3.00 per kit for simple bundles, rising to $5 to $15 for multi-component or retail display work
  • Light assembly (inserting batteries, applying labels, building displays) is usually quoted hourly at $30 to $55 per labor hour

What Kitting and Assembly Services Cover

Kitting is the process of taking separate items and combining them into a single unit that ships or sells as one SKU. A skincare brand kits a cleanser, toner and moisturizer into a starter set. A subscription box company kits eight products into this month's box. A hardware brand kits a device with a cable, manual and branded insert. In each case the 3PL receives components, builds kits to a bill of materials you provide, and the WMS tracks the kit as its own SKU with its own inventory.

There are two operating models. Pre-kitting builds kits in advance in a dedicated work cell, usually in batches of hundreds or thousands, and puts finished kits into pick locations. It is cheaper per kit and faster at order time, but it locks components into a configuration. Kit-to-order (also called kit-on-demand) assembles the kit when an order arrives. It costs more per unit and slows the pick, but keeps components flexible for brands with many bundle variants or unpredictable demand.

Light assembly sits alongside kitting: applying labels or compliance stickers, inserting batteries or instruction cards, building retail counter displays, shrink-wrapping multipacks, or repacking bulk product into retail units. Most 3PLs quote this by the labor hour rather than per unit, and the good ones will time-study your job on a sample before committing to a price.

This page explains what to expect, what it should cost and which vetted providers do this work well. If you have a kitting project with a deadline, Get Matched and describe the components, kit count and date; it is free for brands.

Why kitting is worth outsourcing

  • Bundles raise average order value. Kits sell for more than their components and ship as one pick instead of five
  • Retailers require it. Displays, multipacks and PDQ trays are built to retailer specs before they hit a distribution center
  • Subscription boxes depend on it. Monthly box builds are a kitting project on a hard deadline, every month
  • Inventory accuracy. The WMS tracks components consumed and kits created, so stock counts stay right
  • Labor flexibility. A 3PL can staff a 20,000-kit project for a week without you hiring anyone

How to Choose a Kitting Provider

The questions that separate a 3PL with a kitting line from a 3PL that will figure it out on your project.

Bill of materials and WMS tracking

Your kit needs to exist in the WMS as its own SKU with a bill of materials listing every component and quantity. When a kit is built, components are consumed and kit inventory increases. Ask to see how a kit SKU is set up and how they handle a component running out mid-build.

Pre-kit or kit-to-order

Ask the provider which model they recommend for your demand pattern and why. Predictable, high-volume bundles suit pre-kitting. Many variants or short-lived promotions suit kit-to-order. Some brands run both: pre-kit the top sellers, kit-to-order the long tail.

Time studies and sample builds

A good 3PL will build a sample from your components, time it and quote from the measured rate. Be wary of a per-kit price given before anyone has touched the product. Ask what happens if the actual build time is 40% longer than estimated.

Retail compliance experience

Displays, PDQ trays and multipacks are built to retailer routing guides with specific labeling, pallet patterns and packaging. Ask for the retailers they currently build for and what chargebacks they have absorbed on kitting errors in the last year.

Certifications for regulated product

Kitting supplements, cosmetics, food or medical devices usually requires FDA registration and often cGMP practices. Confirm the specific facility that would do your work holds the certification, not just the company.

Capacity and lead time

Kitting projects compete for labor with peak season picking. Ask for standard lead time from components received to kits available, and how that changes in October through December.

Kitting Services: Common Questions

What brands ask when scoping a kitting or assembly program with a 3PL.

Kitting is assembling individual items into a single package that is stored, picked and shipped as one unit. The 3PL receives the components, builds kits according to your bill of materials, and tracks the finished kit as its own SKU. It is used for product bundles, subscription boxes, gift sets, starter kits, sample packs and retail displays.
Simple kits with two or three components typically cost $0.75 to $1.50 each to build. Kits with four to eight components run $1.50 to $3.00. Complex gift sets or retail displays can be $5 to $15 per unit. Light assembly is usually billed at $30 to $55 per labor hour. Packaging materials are charged at cost on top.
Kitting combines finished products into a bundle without changing them. Assembly alters or completes a product: inserting batteries, attaching a component, applying compliance labels, or building a display from flat-packed parts. Many 3PLs offer both, but assembly generally requires more training, more workspace and hourly rather than per-unit pricing.
Pre-kit when demand is predictable and volume is high, because it is cheaper per kit and ships faster. Kit to order when you have many bundle variants, short promotions or limited component stock you do not want locked into one configuration. Ask your 3PL to model both against your last six months of orders.
Yes, and it is one of the most common kitting programs. Each month's box is a kit with a bill of materials. The 3PL builds the boxes in a batch ahead of the ship date, then picks and ships them as single units. See our subscription box 3PL guide for providers who specialize in it.
If the kit contains supplements, cosmetics, food, over-the-counter products or medical devices, usually yes, and some categories also require cGMP practices. Confirm the specific building that will do the work holds the registration. Kits of apparel, hard goods or printed material do not have this requirement.
