Compare 3PLs built for DTC ecommerce — fast 1–2 day shipping, branded unboxing, subscription support, and deep cart and marketplace integrations.
Browse DTC 3PLs Get Matched Free →Direct-to-consumer (DTC) fulfillment is the operational backbone of ecommerce brands selling directly through their own website, Instagram Shop, TikTok Shop, or a marketplace like Amazon FBM. Unlike wholesale fulfillment, DTC is driven by individual consumer orders — often hundreds or thousands per day — each requiring accurate, fast, and often branded packaging. The 3PL you choose becomes your customer-facing operations team; a late or mis-picked order damages your brand, not theirs.
The defining pressure in DTC fulfillment is speed expectation. Consumer expectations, set by Amazon Prime, now treat 2-day delivery as standard and same-day as premium. A DTC 3PL must be positioned so that ground shipments reach 80–90% of the U.S. population within 2 days — which typically means a single node in the Midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois) or a two-node setup (e.g., East and West Coast) depending on your order geography. Node placement is the single biggest lever on your shipping cost and transit time.
Beyond speed, DTC brands increasingly compete on the unboxing experience: custom mailers, tissue paper, inserts, branded tape, and thank-you cards. A capable DTC 3PL builds these workflows into the pick-pack process at scale without requiring your team to be on-site. Subscription and auto-ship programs add another layer: the 3PL must execute BOM-based kitting on a schedule, swap insert content by cohort, and maintain 100% accuracy when 10,000 boxes go out in a single day.

Ask the 3PL for a zone map showing what percentage of the U.S. population it reaches in 1, 2, and 3 days by ground (UPS/FedEx). A Midwest node (Columbus, Indianapolis, Chicago, Louisville) typically reaches 60–70% of the US in 2 days by ground. Pair with a West Coast node (Los Angeles, Phoenix, Reno) if your order geography is split. The goal is to minimise the percentage of orders requiring expedited shipping just to hit consumer expectations.
Confirm the 3PL has a documented kitting workflow — not just “we can do it.” Ask for: BOM (bill of materials) management in the WMS, insert swap capability by SKU or cohort, custom box and mailer sourcing, and volume pricing on packaging materials. For subscription brands, ask how they handle a date-specific batch of 5,000+ units and what QA process ensures every box gets the right insert and product combination.
For DTC brands, the returns experience is a direct retention lever. Evaluate: inspection and grading speed (how many days from consumer drop-off to restocked inventory?), disposition options (restock vs. refurb vs. liquidate), branded return portal availability (Loop, AfterShip, or native), and refund-trigger speed (does your customer get their refund when the 3PL receives the item or after inspection?). High-performing DTC 3PLs restock sellable returns within 24–48 hours.
Confirm native direct integrations (not just “we work with most platforms”) for every channel you sell on today and plan to sell on in the next 12 months. Priority integrations: Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Amazon FBM/FBA, Walmart Marketplace, TikTok Shop. Ask whether the integration is direct API or middleware-dependent (e.g., ShipBob, Linnworks, Pipe17). Middleware adds a failure point and latency; direct is preferable.
