FULFILLMENT & OPERATING CONTROL
Stock-Keeping Unit (SKU)
A stock-keeping unit is the internal identity used to keep separate inventory and transaction records for an item or variant. A reliable SKU setup preserves that identity across receipts, storage, orders and returns.
STOCK-KEEPING UNIT IN PRACTICE
- Create the masterDefine the item and counting unit.
- Validate cross-referencesCheck vendor and channel codes.
- Approve the setupTest realistic transactions.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A leading zero must survive.
The brand’s item code 00125 is imported as numeric 125. A second system treats them as different records and generates another item. Before transactions proceed, the team compares the brand master, vendor purchase order and WMS record, then approves a documented correction.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Stock-Keeping Unit
Does one SKU mean one physical item?
No. Many physical units can share one SKU; serial identifiers can distinguish individual objects.
Can vendor and internal SKUs differ?
Yes. Maintain a validated cross-reference rather than assuming equality.
Should a missing code be auto-created without review?
Review the creation and mapping rules, and approve exceptions before they affect transactions.
