FULFILLMENT & OPERATING CONTROL
Stock Keeping Unit (SKU)
A stock keeping unit, or SKU, is an internal identifier used to distinguish a product or variant within a defined business system. It links the item to its inventory, ordering and fulfillment records.
STOCK KEEPING UNIT IN PRACTICE
- Define the variantIdentify the inventory item.
- Map identifiersLink brand, vendor and WMS codes.
- Validate transactionsTest receipt and picking.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
One product. Three system codes.
A vendor uses V-041, the brand uses BLUE-M and the WMS uses 000731. A reviewed cross-reference can link those records to the same blue medium shirt. The case barcode remains a packaging-level identifier; it should not replace the unit barcode merely because both resolve to a related item.
