A serial number identifies an individual unit within a defined product or identification scheme. It distinguishes instances, while an item identifier commonly identifies the product type and a lot identifies a group.

SERIAL NUMBER IN PRACTICE

  1. Define the scopeIdentify the unit and owning scheme.
  2. Capture the identityPreserve characters and relevant context.
  3. Track the lifecycleLink receipts, moves, returns and service events.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Product type and individual unit need different references.

Two units share the same SKU but have different serial identities. A return process verifies both the product and relevant serial context rather than selecting any unit with a matching model description.
