INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
Receiving
Receiving accepts and records incoming goods, checking their identity, quantities and required condition or documentation against the agreed expectations.
RECEIVING IN PRACTICE
- Identify the delivery
- Check goods & discrepancies
- Record receipt & status
A WORKED EXAMPLE
100 expected. 96 accepted.
A purchase order expects 100 eaches. The receiver verifies 96 and records a four-unit shortage with the shipment reference. Posting 100 simply to match the PO would conceal the difference. If some of the 96 are held, record that status rather than treating every accepted unit as ready to ship.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Receiving
Does a delivery signature verify every unit?
Not necessarily. A transport handoff and a detailed warehouse receipt can have different scopes.
Should received quantity always equal the PO?
No. Record and investigate the actual result rather than forcing the count to match the expectation.
