INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS

Putaway

Reading time
3 minutes

Putaway moves received or otherwise inbound stock into its assigned storage location and confirms that placement in the inventory record.

PUTAWAY IN PRACTICE

  1. Confirm accepted stock
  2. Assign a suitable location
  3. Move & confirm placement

A WORKED EXAMPLE

40 cases received. 25 put away.

A receipt records 40 cases. Twenty-five are moved and confirmed into storage while 15 remain in inbound staging. Reporting all 40 as put away would hide the outstanding work. Availability for orders depends on the agreed status and location rules, not simply the receipt total.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Make the requirement explicit

Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Putaway

Is receiving the same as putaway?

No. Receiving accepts and records goods; putaway places them into the assigned location.

Does a system suggestion prove a location is suitable?

No. Configuration, actual capacity and site handling rules still need to be correct.
