INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS

Quarantine

Reading time
3 minutes

Quarantine is a controlled hold on inventory pending investigation, inspection or an authorized disposition decision.

QUARANTINE IN PRACTICE

  1. Identify & hold stock
  2. Investigate the issue
  3. Authorize release or disposition

A WORKED EXAMPLE

1,000 on hand. 100 held.

A delivery includes 1,000 units and 100 are held for a condition concern. Physical stock remains 1,000, but the held 100 should not be treated as freely available under the applicable rules. After review, 80 might be released and 20 assigned another approved disposition.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Quarantine

Is quarantined stock automatically scrap?

No. Its final disposition remains pending until the authorized decision is made.

Should quarantine reduce physical on-hand quantity?

A hold usually changes status rather than physical existence. The system’s reporting definitions should make that distinction clear.
