INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
Inventory Visibility
Inventory visibility is access to information about stock quantities, locations, status and movements across the relevant operation or network.
INVENTORY VISIBILITY IN PRACTICE
- Capture stock events
- Share defined balances
- Reconcile exceptions
A WORKED EXAMPLE
100 shipped. The storefront still shows 100.
A warehouse ships 100 units at 10:00, but its channel interface fails. The warehouse balance changes while the storefront continues offering the old quantity. Both screens are visible; the problem is failed synchronization. An exception alert and transaction reconciliation are needed, not another dashboard alone.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.

Questions about Inventory Visibility
Does real-time visibility guarantee accuracy?
No. Fast updates can still transmit incorrect quantities, units or identifiers.
Should held stock appear in reporting?
Yes, with its status clearly identified so physical stock is not confused with available stock.
