WAREHOUSE CONTROL & PERFORMANCE
Yield
Yield measures the output obtained from a defined input or process population, often expressed as a quantity ratio or percentage. The output criteria and measurement units determine its meaning.
YIELD IN PRACTICE
- Define the outputName usable, first-pass or accepted result.
- Define the inputUse a comparable population and unit.
- Calculate and explainReport the ratio with its basis.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
90 accepted from 100 started.
A hypothetical process starts 100 comparable units and accepts 90 under its defined final criteria. Final accepted yield is 90%. If ten of those accepted units required rework, first-pass yield is different and needs its own count.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Yield
Is yield always a weight ratio?
No. Define the relevant unit and population.
Is final yield identical to first-pass yield?
Not when rework or other treatment changes eligibility.
Does high yield prove good profit?
No. Costs, prices and other outcomes also matter.
