A unit load is a group of goods arranged and secured so they can be handled, stored or moved together as one load.

UNIT LOAD IN PRACTICE

  1. Group the goodsDefine what belongs in the load.
  2. Secure & identifyKeep load identity and contents connected.
  3. Move as one loadUse compatible handling and storage arrangements.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

1 load. 20 cases.
240 eaches.

A pallet carries 20 cases with 12 eaches in each case. It is one unit load containing 240 eaches. If each packed case weighs 8 kg and the pallet weighs 24 kg, gross load weight is 184 kg. Moving that load from receiving to storage transfers 240 eaches between locations; it does not create 240 new units. If the load is split, record the contents and identity of the resulting loads.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Unit load

Is a unit load always one pallet?

No. A palletized load is a common example, but other goods grouped for joint handling can also form a unit load.

Can a unit load contain different SKUs?

Yes, where the operation permits it. The contents, segregation and traceability requirements still need to be recorded.

Does one unit load equal one inventory each?

Not usually. It is a handling grouping; its cases and eaches retain their own inventory quantities and units.
