IDENTIFICATION & PACKAGING

Master Carton

Reading time
3 minutes

A master carton is an outer pack holding a defined quantity or grouping of products for handling and distribution.

MASTER CARTON IN PRACTICE

  1. Define the pack hierarchy
  2. Identify the outer carton
  3. Convert & verify quantities

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Eight cartons. Ninety-six units.

A SKU is supplied 12 eaches per master carton. Eight intact master cartons represent 96 eaches. If a supplier changes the pack to ten, reusing the old conversion would record 96 instead of 80. Update and validate the configuration before receiving the changed pack.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Master Carton

Is the master-carton barcode the unit barcode?

They can represent different packaging levels and must be mapped according to the approved item data.

Can master cartons contain mixed items?

Some packaging configurations do. Define the contents rather than assuming every outer carton is homogeneous.
