INVENTORY & SUPPLY OPERATIONS
Takt Time
Takt time is the available production time divided by customer demand for the same period. It expresses the required time per unit needed to match that demand.
TAKT TIME IN PRACTICE
- Set available timeChoose the period and deductions.
- Set demandUse the required units for that period.
- Compare capabilityAssess the actual process against takt.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
420 minutes. 210 units.
With 420 available production minutes and demand for 210 units in the same day, takt is two minutes per unit. If an observed process completes one unit every three minutes under comparable conditions, there is a capacity gap to investigate; changing the target label does not remove it.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Takt Time
Is takt measured cycle time?
No. Takt is demand-derived; cycle time describes actual or planned process behavior.
What is its unit?
Time per required unit, using a consistent period.
Does a takt target prove capacity?
No. Assess actual capability, variation and constraints.
