LOGISTICS SYSTEMS & MEASUREMENT
Throughput
Throughput is the amount of completed output passing a defined process boundary during a stated period. The unit, completion event and time basis determine what the number means.
THROUGHPUT IN PRACTICE
- Define the boundaryName the completion event.
- Count the outputUse a consistent unit and period.
- Assess the flowCompare demand and constraints.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
800 orders in eight hours.
A facility dispatches 800 eligible orders during an eight-hour window, averaging 100 orders per elapsed hour. If 40 labor hours were used, the same output is 20 orders per labor hour. Those are different measures, even though they share the same completed orders.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Throughput
Is throughput the same as productivity?
Not necessarily. Productivity relates output to an input such as labor hours.
Can different order mixes affect it?
Yes. Unit counts alone may hide substantial workload differences.
Does a peak hour prove daily capacity?
No. Review sustained conditions, downtime and the actual work profile.
