FULFILLMENT & OPERATING CONTROL
Statistical Process Control (SPC)
Statistical process control uses statistical methods to monitor process behavior over time and distinguish expected variation from signals warranting investigation. Control charts are one common tool.
STATISTICAL PROCESS CONTROL IN PRACTICE
- Choose the measureDefine data and sampling.
- Monitor behaviorApply the approved chart rules.
- Investigate signalsLook for supported causes.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Stable does not mean acceptable.
A packing process may show consistent behavior around an average that fails the required output specification. Remaining within statistical control limits does not make the output acceptable. The team must address capability and requirements as well as stability.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Statistical Process Control
Are control limits specification limits?
No. They answer different questions about behavior and acceptability.
Does SPC guarantee zero defects?
No. It supports monitoring and investigation; it is not a defect guarantee.
Should every fluctuation trigger adjustment?
No. Use the chosen statistical rules and investigate supported signals.
