FULFILLMENT & OPERATING CONTROL
SKU Rationalization
SKU rationalization is the review of a product assortment to decide which items to retain, change, consolidate or discontinue. It weighs commercial value, service needs, operational complexity and risk rather than simply minimizing the SKU count.
SKU RATIONALIZATION IN PRACTICE
- Assess contributionReview demand, margin and complexity.
- Check dependenciesIdentify customer and supply obligations.
- Approve transitionPlan stock and system changes.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Slow selling. Still needed.
A replacement component sells only 20 units annually but supports an active installed product base. The team compares its service obligation and cost with alternatives before deciding whether to retain it. A second redundant variant may be a better consolidation candidate despite higher recent sales.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.
