INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
ABC Analysis
ABC analysis ranks inventory items using a chosen measure and groups them into classes so management attention can be prioritized.
ABC ANALYSIS IN PRACTICE
- Choose the measure
- Rank the items
- Assign & review classes
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Same quantity. Different importance.
SKU A has annual demand of 1,000 units at a unit cost of $50: annual consumption value is $50,000. SKU B has demand of 5,000 units at $2: $10,000. A value-based ranking puts SKU A ahead despite its lower unit volume. Class boundaries should follow a documented policy; the familiar 80/20 pattern is not a required split.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about ABC Analysis
Must A items be 20% of SKUs?
No. Boundaries depend on the chosen measure and policy, not a universal item percentage.
Does ABC classification tell me where to slot stock?
It can inform slotting, but travel, pick frequency, size and handling constraints also matter.
