Packing List

Reading time
3 minutes

A packing list describes the contents assigned to a shipment or its packages so the goods can be identified and checked.

PACKING LIST IN PRACTICE

  1. Confirm shipment contents
  2. Associate packages & references
  3. Verify documents against goods

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Two cartons. One shipment list.

A shipment contains two cartons: carton 1 holds six units of A and carton 2 holds four units of B. A useful packing list connects those contents to the order and shipment references. If it merely states ten units without package detail, receiving may need extra work to locate a shortage.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Make the requirement explicit

Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.

Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Packing List

Is a packing list the same as an invoice?

No. An invoice concerns the commercial charge; a packing list describes shipment contents.

Does signing for cartons confirm every listed unit?

Not necessarily. Carton acceptance and detailed contents verification are different checks.
