INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
Order Picking
Order picking retrieves the required inventory from storage or staging locations to satisfy an order or warehouse demand.
ORDER PICKING IN PRACTICE
- Read the pick requirement
- Select & confirm stock
- Hand off for verification
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Three lines are not three units.
An order has three lines requesting two, five and one unit respectively. It requires eight units, not three. If pricing includes a first pick and charges additional picks, ask whether a pick means a line, unit, location visit or physical handling action.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Order Picking
Is a pick the same as an order line?
Sometimes in billing, but not universally. The quote must define the unit.
Does order picking include packing?
Not necessarily. Picking and packing are distinct tasks even when the same person performs them.
