INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS

Case Picking

Reading time
3 minutes

Case picking selects full, defined cases of a product to satisfy an order or replenishment task.

CASE PICKING IN PRACTICE

  1. Confirm the case pack
  2. Pick full cases
  3. Verify the order quantity

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Five cases. Sixty eaches.

An order requires 60 eaches of a SKU packed 12 per case. Five full cases supply the order if that packaging level is accepted. Entering five as an each quantity would understate the pick; treating 60 as cases would overstate it. Both the instruction and confirmation need an explicit unit.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Make the requirement explicit

Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.

Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Case Picking

Is case picking the same as pallet picking?

No. A case pick can select part of a pallet; a pallet pick moves the defined pallet load.

Can one SKU have different case packs?

Yes. Approved configurations and identifiers must distinguish them before quantities are converted.
