INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
Inventory Management
Inventory management controls what stock is held, where it is, how it moves and when it should be replenished or dispositioned.
INVENTORY MANAGEMENT IN PRACTICE
- Set stock policies
- Record & control movements
- Review exceptions
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A correct count is only one control.
A count confirms 500 units, but 200 expire before the planned selling period. Quantity accuracy is good while the stock plan is poor. Inventory management must consider identity, condition, demand and timing alongside the total. A replenishment order based only on the 500-unit balance can miss that exposure.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Inventory Management
Is inventory management the same as a WMS?
No. A WMS is a tool; inventory management includes policies, decisions and operational controls.
Does more stock always solve availability problems?
No. Wrong identity, held stock, poor location records or a weak replenishment process can still prevent fulfillment.
