INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
Replenishment
Replenishment restores stock where it is needed, either through external supply or an internal movement from reserve to a picking location.
REPLENISHMENT IN PRACTICE
- Detect the need
- Create supply or movement work
- Confirm stock at destination
A WORKED EXAMPLE
12 at the pick face. 36 more moved in.
A pick location contains 12 eaches and the task moves three reserve cases of 12 eaches into it. The pick face then has 48 eaches, while reserve decreases by 36. Total facility stock is unchanged. An external receipt, in contrast, adds stock to the facility under its receipt rules.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Replenishment
Does replenishment always require a purchase order?
No. Internal replenishment can move existing stock between warehouse locations.
Can a pick face be empty while stock exists?
Yes. Reserve stock may still need an eligible, completed movement into the picking area.
