3PL PRICING & SERVICE SCOPE
Handling rates
Handling rates are the prices charged for specified warehouse activities, such as receiving, picking, packing, loading or additional product handling.
HANDLING RATES IN PRACTICE
- Define the activityDescribe the work and its exceptions.
- Identify the billing unitConfirm per pallet, order, line, each or hour.
- Model your order profileCalculate the bill using realistic volumes and rules.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
100 orders.
300 eaches. Different bills.
Assume 100 orders, each with one line containing three eaches. An illustrative $2 per-order pick fee totals $200. An alternative $0.50 per-each fee totals $150 for 300 eaches. The difference is $50 only if both prices cover the same work and neither has an additional order charge, minimum or other condition. These invented rates are for arithmetic, not market benchmarks or provider offers.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Ask each provider to calculate the same order and activity scenario. Compare the scope and total, not just the headline rate.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL pricing and rates guide for the wider invoice context and the guide to comparing 3PL quotes to compare the same scope, activity profile and billing units.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Handling rates
Are handling and storage the same charge?
No. Handling describes activity; storage usually describes occupancy or a reserved-capacity arrangement. A contract may bundle them, so inspect its scope.
Is the cheapest unit rate always the cheapest provider?
No. Billing units, minimums, included work and your order mix determine the comparable total.
Who commits the monthly order volume?
That depends on the agreement. Where a brand commits forecast or minimum volume, do not describe it as the warehouse guaranteeing those orders.
