Functional Group
A functional group is a collection organized around a defined function. In an organization it can mean a department or team; in X12 EDI it is an envelope grouping related transaction sets.

A WORKED EXAMPLE
One group can contain several order messages.
In an X12 example, several purchase-order transaction sets can be transmitted within one functional group. The receiver’s acknowledgement refers to the relevant control structure. That group should not be interpreted as a warehouse team or proof that all orders are commercially accepted.
