Functional Acknowledgement (FA)
A functional acknowledgement reports specified processing or validation results for an EDI message group or transaction under the relevant standard. X12 997 is a common example.
FUNCTIONAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT IN PRACTICE

- Read the resultInterpret acceptance, rejection and error detail.
- Resolve the business flowEscalate errors and obtain later acceptance events.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Syntax accepted. Order still on hold.
A sender receives a successful functional acknowledgement, while the business application later rejects an unknown SKU. The first response supports a technical milestone; it does not prove the order can be fulfilled.

Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
Put this term to work. Use the EDI guide to understand the message flow, then compare retail and EDI-capable 3PLs against your required transactions and exception controls.
