Electronic data interchange exchanges structured business documents between trading partners using agreed message standards. Logistics uses can include orders, shipment notices, receipts and invoices.

ELECTRONIC DATA INTERCHANGE IN PRACTICE

  1. Agree the messageSpecify standard, version and partner rules.
  2. Map the meaningMatch items, units and event fields.
  3. Prove the exchangeTest acknowledgements, duplicates and failures.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

A valid order contains the wrong unit.

A partner sends quantity 12 in a valid order message. The sender means eaches, but the receiving map interprets cases. Syntax validation passes while the physical requirement changes. The teams investigate the UOM mapping and approve the correction before execution.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Agree the requirement before comparing quotes

Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.

Put this term to work. Use the EDI guide to understand the message flow, then compare retail and EDI-capable 3PLs against your required transactions and exception controls.
