GS1 IDENTIFICATION & RFID EVENTS
Electronic Product Code (EPC)
Electronic Product Code is a GS1 identification syntax for physical objects and other identifiable entities. It is commonly associated with RFID and can represent identifiers for individual items, loads or assets.
ELECTRONIC PRODUCT CODE IN PRACTICE
- Choose the identitySpecify the entity and identifier scheme.
- Capture the identifierUse compatible tags, readers and encoding.
- Validate the eventMap identity, place and business meaning.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Two reads. One physical item.
A reader detects the same tagged item twice during one receiving operation. The system must interpret those observations according to its event rules rather than posting two new units. Identity capture and inventory transaction control are separate tasks.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Electronic Product Code
Is EPC the same as RFID?
No. Identification syntax and capture technology are distinct.
Does an EPC always identify a product type only?
No. Appropriate schemes can identify individual objects or other entities.
Do repeated reads mean repeated stock?
No. Event logic must handle duplicate observations.
