IDENTIFICATION & PACKAGING

Barcode

Reading time
3 minutes

A barcode is a machine-readable visual symbol that encodes data, such as an identifier used to look up a product, location or logistics unit.

BARCODE IN PRACTICE

  1. Identify the object
  2. Scan the symbol
  3. Validate the mapping

A WORKED EXAMPLE

One scan. Which packaging level?

A sealed case holds 12 eaches. Scanning its case identifier should resolve to that case and its approved conversion, not silently to one individual unit. If the unit barcode is mapped as a case barcode, the scanner can read perfectly while the WMS records the wrong quantity. Test both identifiers during onboarding.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Make the requirement explicit

Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.

Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Barcode

Is every barcode a UPC?

No. UPC is one barcode family; other symbols and data structures serve other uses.

Does a successful scan guarantee inventory accuracy?

No. The mapping, quantity, unit and transaction workflow must also be correct.
