Destuffing is unloading goods from a shipping container, often including the handling and sorting of floor-loaded cartons before warehouse receipt.

DESTUFFING IN PRACTICE

  1. Assess the loadConfirm the load condition and agreed unloading arrangements.
  2. Unload & identifyHandle goods using the approved method and record exceptions.
  3. Reconcile & hand offConfirm quantities, stock status and the next destination.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

1,200 expected.
1,180 counted.

A delivery record lists 1,200 cartons. The unloading count records 1,180, with visible damage on 12 of those cartons. The quantity difference is 20 cartons; the 12 damaged cartons are part of the 1,180 counted, not an additional shortage. Record both exceptions separately, preserve evidence and send the receipt for review. Do not book 1,200 undamaged cartons simply because that quantity appears on the paperwork.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Destuffing

Is destuffing the same as devanning?

Both terms commonly describe container unloading. Usage varies, so specify the actual load and work rather than relying on a distinction in the service name.

How long does destuffing take?

There is no universal duration. Carton count, load condition, product weight, equipment, staging and inspection requirements change the work.

Does faster unloading avoid every container charge?

No. Terminal pickup, equipment return, free time and other transport events also matter. Review the carrier or terminal terms separately.
