IDENTIFICATION & BARCODE FORMATS
Code 128
Code 128 is a linear barcode symbology that can encode numeric, alphabetic and other supported characters. Its business meaning depends on the data encoded and the receiving system’s interpretation.
CODE 128 IN PRACTICE
- Define the identifierChoose the intended data and format.
- Produce and scanValidate the actual printed symbol.
- Verify interpretationConfirm the decoded data reaches the correct record.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A leading zero belongs to the identity.
A brand’s item reference is 001234. A spreadsheet import strips the leading zeros and creates 1234 in the warehouse system. A Code 128 symbol encoding 001234 may scan perfectly while failing to match that altered record. The team needs to resolve the identity mismatch, not replace the label with an incorrectly shortened reference.
