INVENTORY & VARIABLE WEIGHT
Catch weight
Catch weight tracks actual measured weight alongside another inventory quantity, such as pieces or cases, for goods whose individual weights vary. The agreed unit and measurement process support inventory and billing.
CATCH WEIGHT IN PRACTICE
- Define both unitsIdentify the count unit and weight unit.
- Capture the weightAssociate measurement with the right item or lot.
- Reconcile the resultCheck count, weight and billing together.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Three pieces. Three different weights.
Three pieces weigh 1.8 kg, 2.0 kg and 2.2 kg net, totaling 6.0 kg. The record is both three pieces and six kilograms. Replacing each weight with an assumed two kilograms happens to match this total but loses the item-level evidence needed for a particular pick or return.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Catch weight
Is catch weight a fixed pack conversion?
No. Actual weights vary, so a fixed average can lose necessary detail.
Can inventory have a count and a weight?
Yes. The system must define and maintain both appropriately.
Does measured weight always include packaging?
No. Gross, tare and net conventions must be stated.
