Big data describes datasets and processing challenges whose volume, variety or arrival rate exceed what a chosen conventional approach can handle effectively. In logistics, sources can include orders, scans, sensors and transport events.

BIG DATA IN PRACTICE

  1. Define the questionChoose the decision and relevant evidence.
  2. Validate the inputsCheck identity, units, timing and permissions.
  3. Test the outputCompare findings with operational records.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

A million scans. One unit mismatch.

A dashboard combines a million warehouse scan records. One client reports receipts in cases while shipment records use eaches, and the conversion is missing from the analysis. The dashboard flags a large inventory imbalance. Processing more records faster will not correct that mismatch. The team first validates the item mapping and pack conversion, then reruns the calculation against reconciled source records.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Agree the requirement before comparing quotes

Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Big data

Does big data mean artificial intelligence?

No. Large-scale data processing can use many techniques, with or without AI.

Is more history always better?

No. Outdated, biased or incompatible records can weaken a result unless their limitations are addressed.

Can analytics replace a physical stock check?

No. Recorded events and physical verification answer related but different questions.
