OPERATIONS & METRIC DEFINITIONS
Business performance measurement (BPM)
Business performance measurement uses defined indicators to assess results against objectives. In logistics, useful measures connect service, accuracy, capacity and cost with consistent operational definitions.
BUSINESS PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT IN PRACTICE
- Define the measureState the objective and exact calculation.
- Validate the evidenceCheck source events and exceptions.
- Review the resultInvestigate causes and assign actions.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
95 on time out of 100 eligible orders.
If 95 of 100 eligible orders meet the agreed dispatch deadline, on-time dispatch is 95%. If another team excludes ten late orders without an approved reason, its reported denominator describes a different population. The teams cannot compare the percentages fairly until eligibility and exclusions are aligned. Delivery performance also requires its own endpoint; dispatch on time does not prove delivery on time.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
Put this term to work. Compare returns-processing providers and use the 3PL selection guide to specify receipt, disposition and exception responsibilities.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Business performance measurement
Is BPM always business performance measurement?
No. Expand the abbreviation because it is used for several concepts.
Can two on-time percentages be incomparable?
Yes. Different deadlines, populations or exclusions can produce materially different measures.
Does a KPI establish the cause of a problem?
No. It indicates a result that may require further operational investigation.
