IDENTIFICATION & PACKAGING

Barcoding

Reading time
3 minutes

Barcoding is the process of assigning, applying and using barcode symbols to capture identifiers or other data in an operational workflow.

BARCODING IN PRACTICE

  1. Map the identifiers
  2. Print & verify labels
  3. Scan at control points

A WORKED EXAMPLE

A correct label on the wrong carton.

A team prints 100 valid labels, but applies one SKU’s label to a different product. Every label may scan successfully while the stock identity is wrong. A first-piece check comparing the physical product, approved identifier and label placement can catch the mistake before the entire run is processed.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Make the requirement explicit

Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Barcoding

Does every warehouse use the same label?

No. Product, customer, carrier and system requirements can differ.

Can barcoding work with an existing brand SKU?

Yes. The scanned identifier can map to an internal SKU through an approved mapping.
