AMAZON CATALOG & PRODUCT DATA
Amazon Standard Identification Number (ASIN)
An ASIN is Amazon’s 10-character product identifier within its catalog. It helps match a seller’s offer to the intended product detail page.
AMAZON STANDARD IDENTIFICATION NUMBER IN PRACTICE
- Identify the productMatch the exact catalog item and variation.
- Map identifiersConnect seller and warehouse records deliberately.
- Verify the shipmentCheck physical units against the approved mapping.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Two colors. Two item mappings.
A brand stocks blue and black bottles under separate internal SKUs. Each sellable variation must be mapped to its intended Amazon catalog item and the required fulfillment identifiers. If the warehouse maps both colors to the same product record, a valid-looking order message can still produce the wrong shipment. An approved cross-reference and a physical scan test should confirm variation and pack quantity before inventory is sent or orders released.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Amazon Standard Identification Number
Is an ASIN the same as a seller SKU?
No. An ASIN identifies an Amazon catalog product; the seller uses its own SKU to manage its offer or stock.
Can multiple sellers offer the same ASIN?
Yes. Sellers can add offers for the same catalog product when appropriate rather than creating a new product identity for each seller.
Does an ASIN replace every barcode?
No. Physical identification and fulfillment labeling requirements remain distinct and depend on the workflow.
