SERVICE DESIGN & OPERATIONAL VALUE
Volumetric Weight
Volumetric weight converts package volume into a weight-equivalent value for transport rating using the applicable service formula. It is also called dimensional weight.
VOLUMETRIC WEIGHT IN PRACTICE
- Measure the packageUse final external dimensions.
- Calculate the equivalentUse the correct units and divisor.
- Apply the rating ruleCompare as the agreement requires.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A defined divisor makes the example meaningful.
A hypothetical service uses centimeters and a divisor of 5,000. A 50 × 40 × 30 cm parcel has 60,000 cubic centimeters of volume and a 12 kg volumetric result before the service’s rounding rules. That invented convention is not a universal carrier rule.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Volumetric Weight
Is volumetric weight the scale weight?
No. It is calculated from package dimensions under a rating formula.
Is the divisor always 166?
No. Units, carrier, service and agreement determine the factor.
Does it always equal the final invoice weight?
No. Apply the full applicable rating and rounding rules.
