SERVICE DESIGN & OPERATIONAL VALUE
Vendor-Managed Inventory (VMI)
Vendor-managed inventory is an arrangement in which a supplier manages defined replenishment decisions using agreed customer inventory and demand information. Decision rights, targets and ownership are established by the arrangement.
VENDOR-MANAGED INVENTORY IN PRACTICE
- Agree the rulesDefine targets and decision authority.
- Share the positionProvide reliable stock and demand data.
- Review replenishmentMonitor decisions and results.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Supplier-managed replenishment without assumed ownership.
A supplier reviews a customer’s approved stock position and proposes replenishment under agreed limits. The contract separately determines when title and payment obligations change. Giving the supplier replenishment responsibility does not itself make the goods consignment stock.
