SERVICE DESIGN & OPERATIONAL VALUE
Value Stream Mapping (VSM)
Value-stream mapping visualizes the material and information flow for a defined product or service path. It supports understanding the current state and designing an improved future state.
VALUE STREAM MAPPING IN PRACTICE
- Choose the streamSet the product family and boundaries.
- Observe the current stateRecord work, queues and signals.
- Design and testPrioritize a feasible future state.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Ten minutes of work. A day of waiting.
An order requires ten minutes of hands-on work but waits in release and dispatch queues for much longer. A map makes the waiting and triggering information visible; improving the pick step alone may barely change total lead time.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Agree the requirement before comparing quotes
Use the actual shipment, stock and service requirements. Record the billing unit, included work and responsibility for exceptions.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Value Stream Mapping
Is VSM only a process flowchart?
It includes flow relationships and relevant operating information, not just a sequence of boxes.
Must it cover the entire global network?
No. Define a useful scope for the problem.
Does a future-state map implement itself?
No. Assign changes, owners and verification.
