WEIGHT & MEASUREMENT
Tare weight
Tare weight is the weight of the container, packaging or other excluded material that is subtracted from gross weight to determine the net contents weight.
TARE WEIGHT IN PRACTICE
- Define what is tareState which packaging or equipment is excluded.
- Measure consistentlyUse comparable gross and tare measurements.
- Calculate net contentsSubtract tare from gross in the same unit.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
50 kg gross.
2 kg tare. 48 kg net.
A filled container weighs 50 kg. Its relevant empty packaging weighs 2 kg. Net product weight is 50 − 2 = 48 kg. If the packaging is replaced by one weighing 3 kg while product quantity stays unchanged, gross becomes 51 kg and net remains 48 kg. For a shipment with a pallet, state separately whether the pallet belongs in the tare calculation and whether the reported gross weight includes it.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Tare weight
What is the tare-weight formula?
For matching measurements, tare = gross − net. Equivalently, net = gross − tare. Keep the unit and packaging scope consistent.
Can I subtract tare from a scale reading that is already net?
That would subtract it twice. Confirm whether the instrument is displaying gross or net before calculating.
Does a lower tare always reduce shipping cost?
No. The applicable charge may be governed by dimensional weight, minimums or another rating rule, although packaging weight still affects the actual shipment.
