INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
Forward Picking
Forward picking uses accessible picking locations supplied from reserve stock to serve routine order demand.
FORWARD PICKING IN PRACTICE
- Size the pick face
- Pick current demand
- Replenish from reserve
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A 48-unit pick face needs supply.
A location holds 48 eaches and expected picks total 72 before the next planned refill. At least 24 more eaches are needed to cover that demand, subject to availability and the approved replenishment unit. A case pack of 12 makes that two cases, not two eaches.

Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
Put this term to work. Use the 3PL selection guide to turn these operating requirements into provider checks, and the 3PL RFP guide to document evidence, responsibilities and exceptions.

Questions about Forward Picking
Is forward picking only for individual units?
No. A forward area can support appropriate each or case picking depending on the design.
Is an empty pick face the same as no stock?
No. Stock may remain in reserve, on hold or awaiting replenishment.
