INVENTORY & WAREHOUSE OPERATIONS
Order Fulfillment
Order fulfillment is the coordinated process of accepting an order, allocating stock, picking, packing and handing the shipment into the agreed delivery flow.
ORDER FULFILLMENT IN PRACTICE
- Accept & allocate
- Pick & pack
- Dispatch & confirm
A WORKED EXAMPLE
Ordered Friday. Shipped Monday.
An order enters the system on Friday after the stated dispatch cutoff. If the next operating day is Monday, Monday dispatch may be consistent with the agreed service. That does not mean delivery occurred on Monday. Keep order acceptance, dispatch and carrier delivery separate.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
Make the requirement explicit
Use the same scope and units when comparing providers. Put the agreed responsibility, included work and exception process into the service description.
Put this term to work. Connect this step to the wider workflow with the eCommerce fulfillment guide, then use the 3PL selection guide to test the proposed service.
A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Order Fulfillment
Does fulfillment always include transport delivery?
The commercial scope varies. Confirm whether the provider manages dispatch, delivery or both.
Does order acceptance mean it will ship today?
No. Eligibility, cutoff, stock status and the agreed service calendar also matter.
