Item coding is the controlled assignment and management of identifiers for products or inventory items. It connects physical goods and product variants to records used in purchasing, storage, fulfillment and reporting.

ITEM CODING IN PRACTICE

  1. Define the itemSeparate relevant variants and pack levels.
  2. Assign the identifiersUse controlled formats and mappings.
  3. Validate the exchangeTest imports, scans and transactions.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

A matching description is not a verified mapping.

A supplier uses one item code and the brand another. The warehouse links them through reviewed master data, retaining the unit and case identifiers rather than replacing one merely because descriptions match.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
