An inventory management system maintains records and processes for inventory quantities, identities, locations and movements. Its scope may include purchasing, availability and replenishment, depending on the product and implementation.

INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN PRACTICE

  1. Define the recordsEstablish items, units and locations.
  2. Record the changesCapture receipts, movements and shipments.
  3. Verify and reconcileCompare records with physical evidence.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

A correct SKU with the wrong unit still fails.

A system receives 10 cases containing 12 eaches per case. The team verifies the conversion and identifier mapping before recording 120 eaches, rather than treating 10 as an unqualified quantity.
