Inventory planning decides what stock to hold, how much to replenish, when to replenish it and where to position it to meet defined service and cost objectives. It combines demand expectations with supply and operating constraints.

INVENTORY PLANNING IN PRACTICE

  1. Define the objectiveAgree service, cost and risk priorities.
  2. Build the positionReconcile stock, commitments and expected receipts.
  3. Review the responseSet replenishment actions and exception owners.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

The same forecast can require different stock plans.

Two products have similar weekly demand but different replenishment lead times. The planner considers those lead times and uncertainty before setting order timing and stock protection; the demand number alone is insufficient.
