Full container load (FCL) is a shipping arrangement in which one shipper books a container for their cargo. The cargo travels in that dedicated container rather than sharing its space with other shippers’ consignments, as it would with LCL.

ONE BOOKING. ONE DEDICATED CONTAINER.

  1. Load at originCargo is packed and secured for the booked container.
  2. Move the containerThe sealed container travels through the agreed transport chain.
  3. Unload at destinationArrange delivery, unloading and return of the empty equipment.

The exact handoffs depend on the agreed service and shipping terms. FCL is not automatically a door-to-door quote.

COMPARE LIKE WITH LIKE

A cost comparison.
No universal volume rule.

Suppose comparable quotes are $4,000 for FCL and $125 per cubic metre for LCL, with no other differences included in this simplified example.

32 m³

$4,000 ÷ $125 = 32 m³. At 16 m³, LCL is $2,000; it does not equal the $4,000 FCL quote.

Actual LCL charges can use weight-or-measure rules, minimums and fixed handling charges. Add every relevant charge before comparing alternatives.

Illustrative amounts in one currency; no market-rate or service equivalence claim.
Example cargoLCL at $125/m³FCL flat charge
16 m³$2,000$4,000
32 m³$4,000$4,000

Even if a formula favours FCL, the cargo must physically fit and meet equipment and transport limits.

FCL vs LCL: what changes?

20-foot and 40-foot describe nominal equipment classes. Confirm actual specifications with the carrier.

Container choice also affects the warehouse. Ask about appointment capacity, unloading method and drayage between the port or rail terminal and the facility. Allow for demurrage and equipment-related deadlines under the applicable terms.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE

Find the gaps in the freight quote

Separate ocean transport from origin charges, destination handling, customs-related services, inland delivery, unloading and empty return. Identify which charges are included, conditional or excluded.

Use the same cargo dimensions, gross weight, readiness date and delivery location for each comparison.

Avoid three FCL assumptions

  1. Booked does not mean fully packed. Check the load plan, weight distribution and equipment limits.
  2. A container rate is not always a total delivery cost. Compare the complete scope and validity dates.
  3. Cubic metres alone do not choose the mode. Consider handling, timing, weight, cargo restrictions and the actual quotes.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT

Questions about Full Container Load (FCL)

Must an FCL container be completely full?

No. FCL refers to a dedicated container booking. Partly filled containers can still move as FCL, subject to safe loading and carrier requirements.

Is FCL always cheaper or faster than LCL?

No. The answer depends on cargo, lane, schedules, handling stages and the full quote. There is no volume threshold that works for every shipment.

Does FCL include delivery to my 3PL?

Only when that service is included in the agreed scope. A port-to-port offer and a door-to-door offer cover different work.
