MODELS & OPERATIONAL VALIDATION
Digital twins
A digital twin is a digital representation of a real-world entity or system used for purposes such as monitoring, analysis or scenario testing. Scope, data linkage and validation determine what it can reliably represent.
DIGITAL TWINS IN PRACTICE
- Define the purposeSpecify the system and decision being modeled.
- Validate the linkageCheck input sources, timing and model behavior.
- Test and reviewCompare predictions with actual outcomes.
Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.
A WORKED EXAMPLE
A virtual layout predicts a shorter route.
A warehouse model predicts shorter travel after moving a pick location. Before implementation, the team checks demand assumptions, congestion, replenishment and handling constraints against actual observations. The simulated distance reduction does not by itself prove higher complete-line throughput or safe operation.

A LITTLE MORE CONTEXT
Questions about Digital twins
Must every digital twin be a 3D model?
No. The representation should suit the purpose.
Does a twin always update in real time?
No. Linkage and update behavior depend on the implementation.
Does simulation prove the change will work?
No. Model validation and appropriate operational testing are still needed.
