Also called

Abbreviation

A bill of lading records goods received for carriage and the applicable transport arrangement. Its type and terms determine its role, including whether it can function as a document of title.

BILL OF LADING IN PRACTICE

  1. Describe the shipmentConfirm parties, goods, quantities and weights.
  2. Record the handoffCapture receipt and any relevant exceptions.
  3. Control releaseFollow the applicable delivery and document process.

Use the agreed units, actual records and approved procedures for your operation.

A WORKED EXAMPLE

Four pallets. 400 cartons. One shipment.

A warehouse tenders four pallets with 100 cartons per pallet. Documents and labels should distinguish four handling units from 400 cartons. A later shortage investigation needs the declared units, the actual count and any exceptions at handoff. A generic “four pieces” entry can leave the parties discussing different quantities even when both records appear internally consistent.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR QUOTE
